Toilet Talk: July 23, 2026

When family visited in October, we wanted an outing that would share a little of our Louisiana culture. Vermilionville Historic Village was the perfect choice.
The city now known as Lafayette was founded in 1821 as Vermilionville, and this 23-acre village along Bayou Vermilion offers a glimpse into those early days through original buildings, historically accurate reconstructions, museum exhibits, a restaurant, and more.
Naturally, I was especially interested in the bathroom history. 😉
The Joseph Firnberg House, built around 1860, had nearly every amenity a person could hope for at the time, including a clawfoot tub and an indoor toilet. I was also slightly surprised to discover that group seating was apparently an option in the outhouse. Nothing says family bonding quite like a three-seater potty party. 😂
For historical charm, cleanliness, and ease of use, the Firnberg House bathroom earns:

The village’s modern public restroom was clean and functional, although fairly basic. It also had no air conditioning, which matters deeply in Louisiana, so I simply cannot round up.😉🥵

Until next flush… 🚽💙
